Job Summary:

The Director, New Product Introduction (NPI) is responsible for leading and driving initiatives focused on enhancing Terumo’s ability to successfully introduce new products to market by enhancing our manufacturing processes and integrating automation. This leadership position will be responsible for ensuring the alignment of product development, process engineering, and automation strategy with with company goals, while maintaining operational excellence, efficiency, and scalability. In partnership with the Development and Technology (D&T) team, the role leads the team who helps to ensure robust manufacturing processes are developed to support a smooth product launch and transfer into the manufacturing Value Streams.

Job Details:

Leadership and Strategy

  • Lead the NPI organization, setting direction, strategy, and performance expectations that meet Terumo Corporation’s short- and long-term plans.
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives for process optimization, automation, and product introduction that support overall business objectives.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to align process engineering, automation, and NPI strategies with the company’s long-term goals and vision

New Product Introduction:

  • Lead and ensure seamless integration between the Project Management Office (PMO), product development, engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams as new products or product changes transfer to manufacturing
  • Collaborate with product development, marketing, and operations to ensure the successful scale-up and launch of new products into production across multiple global sites
  • Manage cross-functional teams to ensure alignment on timelines, resources, and deliverables

Process Engineering:

  • Oversee the design, optimization, and standardization of new manufacturing processes to ensure efficiency, quality, and scalability.
  • Lead the identification and implementation of new process technologies, tools, and methodologies to improve productivity, reduce costs, and maintain high product quality.
  • Conduct process audits and root cause analysis to identify improvements and eliminate inefficiencies.
  • Drive the integration of automation technologies into the production environment to enhance productivity, reduce downtime, and improve safety.
  • Work closely with the product development and operations teams to design, implement, and optimize automated systems and solutions.
  • Continuously evaluate emerging automation technologies and their potential application to enhance the company’s manufacturing capabilities

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Project Management Office (PMO), product development, quality, operations, and finance to ensure that product and process specifications are met, including yield, cost of goods sold (COGS), and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
  • Act as a liaison between engineering and operations to ensure smooth communication and coordination during product launches and process changes.
  • Ensure all stakeholders are kept informed about the progress and challenges of NPI and automation initiatives.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by promoting the use of Lean, Six Sigma, and other process improvement methodologies.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and process improvement, driving initiatives that lead to operational efficiencies and competitive advantage.
  • Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices related to process engineering, automation, and NPI.

Team Development & Mentorship:

  • Manage associate development, performance management, and associated tasks related to leading a productive and engaged team.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and professional development to the NPI team.
  • Develop associate Individual Development Plans (IDP)
  • Lead recruitment and hiring efforts to ensure the team has the right skills and capabilities.
  • Promote knowledge sharing, collaboration, and cross-functional engagement

Position Requirements:

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Extensive experience in the development of new and improvement of existing manufacturing processes for global Medical Devices or other highly regulated industries in accordance with global regulatory and quality standards and requirements.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to influence and inspire teams.
  • Expertise in process engineering, manufacturing optimization, and automation system integration.
  • Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies, with experience in managing complex, cross-functional projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement frameworks.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.

Background Experiences

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, or related field). Advanced business MBA/Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in process engineering, operations, and/or manufacturing
  • Proven track record in leading cross-functional teams to successfully launch new products and integrate automation into manufacturing processes.
  • Extensive experience with manufacturing processes, automation technologies, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Minimum of 7 years of proven overall experience leading engineering teams of +10 through development process for complex projects.
