Job Description and Duties

This Research Data Specialist I (RDS I) functions as the lead for analytical and administrative assignments related to data for Regional Center clients ages 0 through 22, in the Children, Adolescents, and Young Adult Services Division (CAYAS) at DDS. The RDS I functions as the subject matter expert in conducting data extractions, analyses, compiling, and developing data summaries for the Division and Department. Job functions will include developing and maintaining data dashboards, working with external agencies, and assisting with federal reporting duties.

This position provides hybrid telework opportunities, with employees required to work in-person at least two days per week.

The location for this position is to be determined, with availability in Sacramento and Orange Counties. It is not necessary to apply in both counties

Working Conditions

Open-spaced partitioned office in close proximity to co-workers. Typical working hours are Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. Work on a personal computer 80 percent of total office time. Travel may be required independently or as a team to local programs within California for monitoring and technical assistance activities or to understand the process of those activities. This position provides hybrid telework opportunities, with employees required to work in-person at  least two days per week.

Special Requirements

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


Knowledge of: Advanced computer skills with Microsoft Office products, including Microsoft Excel and Power BI. Knowledge of Visual Basics for Applications and statistical software such as SQL or Python. Knowledge of analytical methods, principles, and techniques is essential to the successful performance of job duties, as is knowledge of human service systems and agencies. Knowledge of research methods is desirable. The successful applicant will have skills and experience working with people in a teamwork environment.

Ability to: Read and interpret laws, regulations, and data indicators; present data and reports in public and in meetings; evaluate and solve problems accurately and take effective action; make clear and comprehensive reports and keep sensitive or confidential records; meet and deal respectfully with the public; establish and maintain effective working relations with others; apply specific laws, rules and office policies and procedures. Must be able to perform the essential job functions and adhere to professional conduct at all times; must be able to self-direct for timely project completion; and must maintain regular attendance.

  • Other - Incumbents must possess 12 semester or 18 quarter units course work in any combination of a data driven research-related field, such as economics, mathematics, psychology, sociology, demography, geography, anthropology, statistics, data science or a research-related field. This must include at least one course in statistical methods;  and  Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college with a bachelor's degree. Work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis by applicants who have the required units mentioned above.
